How will a food diary help me?
I recently spoke about asking my clients to keep a food diary for 7 days. This is so helpful as it means I can look at the diary with my client and discuss what is working well for them and what might be causing issues for them. I work in partnership with them to take steps towards improving their health and creating a greater sense of well-being.
It is important to work on any dietary changes gradually so the digestion has time to adjust. I am always cautious to not overwhelm clients with sudden and rapid changes. Many of us have developed habits over years and are used to certain foods and meals and the times that we eat them.
Sometimes these habits are actually hindering our health and can be putting a strain on our bodies. As we review a food diary, we can start to identify which foods might actually be making us feel worse. In time, my clients develop a greater awareness of what is helping their digestion and overall health and what might be hindering it.
When we start to listen to the messages our body is trying to send us, we can then make better choices to boost our vitality. We start to remove overload of foods that are hindering our health from our diets and this allows the body to work towards being in balance.
The more in balance the body is, the better able it is to harness its innate ability to heal itself.
Some clients have said it is hard to make changes or they find it too overwhelming. So it is important to take small steps and make gradual changes – it does not need to be done overnight! Someone may have developed habits over years so it will take time to change but the great thing is that we can all develop new and more helpful habits. For some people it may just be slight tweaks to their diet, for others it may mean working on more significant changes but it can all be done gradually and with support.
The key is to have more awareness about what we eat and drink and to recognise the messages our body is sending us.
Once changes start to give an improvement in how someone feels and/or lessens or removes certain symptoms they are experiencing then they feel motivated to continue and to reap an increased feeling of well-being.
We are all human of course and now and again we may slip back into old habits particularly if we feel tired or stressed. Remember to not be too hard on yourself. You can soon get yourself back on track!
Once you have deepened your own awareness and understanding of what foods and daily habits work best for you, that knowledge and positive association with healthier habits will always be available to you. A simple tool like a food diary can provide you will all the knowledge and understanding you need to feed your well-being.
